Death toll at famous Iceland dive site continues to mount
You may or may not have heard about Silfra pond at the famed Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. Massively popular for divers since it affords the chance to literally dive between continents. But there´s a downside too.
This week a tourist of Chinese origin died after having experienced unknown difficulties diving in Silfra. Hardly a rare occurrence as diving is one of the most dangerous sport to practice but this is the third death in just a couple of years and Silfra can is neither very deep nor very difficult.
The circumstances about the newest fatality are not known at this time and neither did investigators find much to go on in the deaths of the past. No determined reason why diving in relatively shallow pond and almost always with groups of others and guides watching all the time can still lead to death.
Mind you, these are just the deaths. A number of folks have come close too meeting their maker too while diving here but luckily got help in time.
Surely something to keep in mind when giddy with excitement about jumping into this unique pond of ours. It could be your last jump if you do not take utmost care.
