Expensive car rental in Iceland a cause for celebration in the industry
So what if we are much more expensive than companies in all the other countries around us? Making more money off tourists is just a great thing, don´t you think?
The above is the gist of what Hjalmar Petursson, the CEO of the car rental agency ALP in Iceland, had to say when journalists inquired about the reasons why renting a car in Iceland is way more expensive than anywhere else in the Western hemisphere it seems. At least according to informal price comparisons with nearby countries, one of which is Norway, which usually takes the prize for the most expensive country in the world.
Turns out, as Total Iceland has covered before on its own, renting a medium-sized vehicle in Iceland is 15% to 25% more expensive than same vehicle in Norway and a whopping 50% to 80% more expensive than renting one in France or Spain.
Although the CEO of ALP was all for high prices he did say prices in general were much, much lower in the off-season in deep winter. Except he could not back this up as prices in wintertime were the same as in summertime.
Seems to us at Total Iceland that a company with this kind of mentality should be avoided. Not one iota of respect for the very people using the services of this company and keeping this individual in a job. Sadly though, ALP is far from being the only expensive car rental agency. In fact, it is one of the cheaper ones in the country.
