Reykjavik hotel review: Hotel Holt way past its prime
Like any decent travelsite Total Iceland will from now on review local Icelandic hotels on a regular basis. This we will do unbeknownst to owners or staff since our experience is that we always get extra service when calling beforehand. This is also why we do not list our correspondends name or publish pics of writers at Total Iceland. We are professionals.
Expect a review on every hotel, hostel and guesthouse in the coming months and we will use a disappointment scale from 0 to 10. Why disappointement scale? You see, many think it simply tremendous that hotel staff does what it is supposed to do. Which is partly why Tripadvisor reviews, apart from being often bogus, mislead people. Why give five stars if staff is courteous and goes out of its way? Isn´t that what we expect when paying a leg and a half for a friggin´ bed for the night?
We will start with Hotel Holt in Reykjavik. For ages, it seems, this place has been the IT place for the rich and famous locally and otherwise. Its story is long but roughly an individual making bucks here selling bacon decided to start a fancy hotel, the first of its kind in Reykjavik Iceland.
This guy accomplished his goal and for decades you were absolutely nobody if you did not stay at Hotel Holt when in town. The hotel was the finest in Reykjavik right until the founder died and the relatives took over. Since then it has been downhill and when Total Iceland visited we could almost count the cobwebs.
The room was at best, decent, in spite of us wishing especially for something special due to anniversary. A lie, of course, but a great way to check if staff takes extra care. They didn´t.
The room, on fourth floor, was damp and very small by local standards. The bed was simply okay. The TV did not work and neither did the alarm clock. We did not feel especially welcome in the lobby and we did not get a smile at the bar. Staff overall was nice but it was easy to get the feeling it was superficial.
Hotel Holt Reykjavik gets -8 on the disappointment scale. This is basic stuff but with lowest prices around 250$ / 195€ a night this is far from worth it. Below you can check out other hotel establishments in Reykjavik.
