Dilemma of the day for the curious. How to get up close and personal with the majestic volcanic eruption taking place in Holuhraun just North of Vatnajokull glacier?
Sorry to disappoint you folks but the only way to get close to the place is from above. Some parties in Iceland offer sightseeing flights over the area but these are few and demand overwhelming too. Going anywhere near here on foot, or vehicle will only result in a large fine as law enforcement is guarding the area very closely.
We understand completely the frustration of not being able to witness such marvel as fiery hot lava being thrown hundred meters up in the air. This is a better show than anything any human could ever devise and without doubt the greatest show on earth right now.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Not something you´d want to hit you on the head unless years of plastic surgery is your favorite pastime[/blockquote]
But before you do anything in haste you may want to consider the dangers of enjoying a day out around these parts. The molten lava is freely flowing in all directions. The air is thick with poisonous gases and those fiery balls of lava can fly considerable distances. Not something you´d want to hit you on the head unless years of plastic surgery is your favorite pastime.
But all that is just child´s play. The major danger here are the non-stop rumblings underneath Vatnajokull glacier. Rumblings that have already created a vast crevice underneath the glacier and there is now a very real possibility that the eruptions going on now are but the tiny tip of the iceberg. Any number of volcanoes here can go off at any minute and some of those so big no one near would escape even on the fastest car.
Abide your time then and make do with taking a flight or watching TV. A very classic example of better safe than sorry.
