Thingvellir, Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall (pictured) deserve more than half an hour stop. PIC Matt Benton
Y ou will not read very much about Iceland without learning of the so-called Golden Circle tour. Apart from visiting the Blue Lagoon this is the most popular tourist route in Iceland.
But although this tour, which usually includes Thingvellir, Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall, is a must-see the Total Iceland team recommends you do it on your own. The guided tours are rather expensive and you will easily save money and have a much better time by renting a car.
At the time of writing the ticket for a guided tour is roughly about 10.000 kronas (80$ / 60€) per person and upwards. This is also the going price for a small rental car for a whole day. By going on your own you not only save money but you can also take the time you want at each place. And trust us when we say that roughly an hour in each place, the maximum time with most guided tours, will do justice to no one.
Besides, there is more to see around the areas covered than just these three places. This is Icelandic farmland and geothermal energy is abundant. Just driving leisurely through the countryside will make your Iceland trip much more enjoyable than by sitting in a bus.
