If today it was your intention to visit Dettifoss waterfall or neaby Jokulsargljufur canyon in Iceland you could not have picked a worse date. You see, a thing called Bardarbunga just ripped your plan to pieces.

Yup folks, volcanic eruption has started in Bardarbunga volcano underneath Vatnajokull glacier and rescue teams have started closing off areas to be on the safe side.

Remarkably, if we had not scientific equipment available no one would know about any eruption at all because although it has certainly started the volcano is so deep underneath the massive glacier it has some ways yet to reach the top. Scientific name is: subglacial eruption.

Before you tear your heart out one should wait and see if this thing actually reaches the surface and just then will it be clear how massive this eruption really is. In the meantime, go visit Melrakkasletta or go whale watching from Husavik. Lots of options and no need to make a volcanic eruption ruin everything 😉
