D part from a couple of sculpture gardens or so the capital of Iceland is mostly void of eye-pleasing fancy artwork or iconic sculptures for all to enjoy. The viking ship sculpture is an exception.
This great piece of art, pictured, is found quite near downtown Reykjavik and only about ten minute walk along the shore from the center. It is one of few spots in the open where interested parties gather the have a look. Most agree, it is one great sculpture of a viking ship. Except, contrary to popular belief, this is not a viking ship at all.
The name of this iconic piece is the Sun Voyager, Sólfarið in Icelandic language, made by local artist Jón Gunnar Árnason. While certainly reminiscent of a viking boat the sculpture is in fact an ode to the sun. The boat is a dreamboat calling forth the promise of uncharted territories. It is a dream of hope.
Quite excellent spot for a photo and only a short ten to fifteen minute leisurely walk from center of downtown Reykjavik.
