E ver since the first modern Icelander had the idea of getting drunk out of his mind in pure nature the Thorsmork Nature Reserve has been tremendously popular. Indeed, it was here where people came for decades explicitly to party and then party some more.
Mind you, this is long before anyone but the weirdest peoples had an interest in walking or trekking and roughly the only serious concern here was finding a decent spot to puke, relieve oneself or have sex. We suspect quite a handful of locals were originally made around here and how infinitely better place than any bedroom.
For this reason Thorsmork, which roughly translates as Thor´s valley or Thor´s prairie, should in normal circumstances be a pretty downtrodden place after years of partying on the premises but it is not and not because of people taking extra care. No. Thorsmork area is still a marvel for the simple reason you cannot get there very easily.
You see, to get to Thorsmork you have to cross some heavy and dangerous glacial rivers and you only do that by bus or other large vehicles or on foot. Regular bus trips from Reykjavik are available in summertime and from other places en-route like Selfoss or Hvolsvollur.
Apart from camping here accommodation can be hard to find. A limited number of cabins are available for rent here but these are popular as iPad 7 and even booked years in advance. Get in touch with team Total Iceland if there is interest and we will assist if possible.
As for things to do in Thorsmork. Well, let us put it this way: if you have eyeballs to see and a mind to appreciate you will never want to leave this place…. even if there is no sex.
