The most famous square in Reykjavik Iceland over Christmastime…. totally empty. Prepare for some places to be closed over Xmas and New Years in Iceland. PIC aromano

Visitors to Iceland over Christmas en New Year´s might be in for an unpleasant surprise no one bothered to tell them about. Many popular places; i.e. stores, restaurants, bars and even some smaller hotels and guesthouses could more or less be closed over this time.

Yeah, we know nobody mentioned this which is another reason for you to follow Total Iceland instead of the more popular online tourist guides. We have no affiliation to anyone and are not afraid of telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

And since most locals here are overworked the whole year round many businesses here just lock their doors over Christmas and throw away the key. Not only do business owners have to pay a whole lot more for staff this time of year but a lot of people prefer to spend time with their families instead of making some extra bucks.

This is not to say there will be nothing to do for you. Most bigger tour operators will still gladly take your money and the more famous restaurants will be open most days. There will just not be the same choice of places as perhaps you´ve been led to believe.
