H alf an hour away from the capital of Iceland is the mountain range Esja. Should you wish to view the capital, surrounding towns and way out to the sea in the absolutely best way this is the place to climb on a clear day.

Unlike other mountains in Iceland you will have loads of company if the weather is nice since climbing Esja has become something of a cult hit in recent years. The trail up and down can actually get pretty crowded at the worst of times.

Take highway 1 from Reykjavik to Akranes. Approximately 20 minutes drive to Mogilsa, Mogils River, by the roots of Esja. From there there are clearly marked climbing paths up the mountain. The climb is moderately difficult. Enjoy.
