F or years music critics the world over have wondered where Icelandic musicians get the energy and ideas to take the world by storm time and time again as has been the case with performers such as Björk, Sigurros and lately Of Monsters and Men.

It makes little sense to them that artists from this barren island with its 300 thousand inhabitants repeatedly make such waves internationally and some wonder what could be in the water in Iceland.

Well, it is no secret the water is fantastic and much purer and better tasting than most other places in this world. However, that is not where locals get their energy and inspiration. That comes with the territory.

You only have to read accounts of foreign people travelling in Iceland to understand that the energy here is not just felt by locals. Many talk about the weird energy they feel here instantly and some even try to locate the source of that energy.

Maybe it is the volcanic legacy of the land. Iceland is one of the youngest lands on earth evidenced by the warm earth in many places. Or maybe this or maybe that. We don´t know.

However there are people more in touch with the energy world than others and those maintain that Iceland really has a number of very cosmic/mystic places. Spots where you connect to the inner you or other worlds just by being there.

Team Total Iceland is not blessed with such understanding or power but we too know well that in some places in Iceland there is more or denser energy than elsewhere. Or at least it feels as though it is.

In any case, we cannot explain this but three places frequently mentioned in this regard are:

Snaefellsjokull glacier > For quite a lot of locals the symbolic Snaefellsjokull mountain is a mecca for purity and inspiration. Indeed, some say the glacier is one of the seven most important cosmic centers on the earth. Even the uninitiated often feel “something” in the vicinity of Snaefellsjokull but perhaps that is just the cold streak coming from the glacier in calm weather.

Thorsmork > Two similar places in the South of Iceland have a reputation for being cosmic. Both are also very close to glaciers. These are Thorsmork and Skaftafell but due to proximity to stunning mountains laced with thick glacier tongues Thorsmork is better placed for people to feel “something.”

Bulandstindur > This pyramid-shaped mountain in the East of Iceland makes many gape with awe. Its shape is quite different from other mountains in the area and indeed in Iceland. In this case no glacier is nearby but many do feel some awesome mystic power streaming from the mountain at all times.
