I n theory you do not have to go far in Iceland to experience birds of various kinds. In fact, you only need to go outside in most places. However, a particularly nice place to get up close and personal with birds is on the tiny island of Vigur nestled in the deep and mystifying Isafjardardjup fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland.
Vigur island is just about big enough for you can change your mind but while doing so you can wander around nests of eider birds, guillemoths and puffins while at the same time preventing the beautiful and super smooth arctic terns from breaking your skull.
Should you get your fill of birds you can also say hello to the friendly people inhabiting this place or take a look at the only windmill in the country.
The reason why the island attracts such numbers of birds is not hard to fathom. It is too far away from the shore to the mainland to all but eliminate any danger from land animals.
To get here you will need a boat and tours are offered all summer from Isafjordur town. Team Total Iceland recommends this and also recommends laying down among the birds, closing your eyes and enjoying.
