Care for free superfoods? Head to Iceland in late August and pick berries like there is no tomorrow.

Some so-called experts call them super-foods. We just call them berries. And should you like some you better head out into local nature no later than the end of August.

All good things come to an end and wild Icelandic berries do so quickly. The time frame for picking them ripe and perfect is usually no longer than three weeks from the middle or late August each year. Sometimes even less so if temperature drops rapidly.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Berries grow wild all across Iceland[/blockquote]

There is no one place better than other. Berries grow wild all across Iceland and every region has their share. Even if you do have to search the very first taste will make it worth it.

One fantastic aspect of roaming around the countryside looking for berries is the fact there are no dangerous animals or insects anywhere in Iceland. You can lie down anywhere and fall fast asleep worry-free. Sure, a small spider or two might come along for curiosity sake for these are harmless.

Another fantastic thing to do when in Iceland is to try freshly picked berries with your Skyr, the Icelandic yogurt-like dish. Guaranteed to fill your stomach without adding an ounce of fat.

Types of berries found in Iceland are:

  • Blueberries
  • Stone bramble berries
  • Crow berries
  • Bilberries
  • Strawberries
