The news that the US foreign office actually warns its citizens about staying in downtown Reykjavik Iceland very late or very early on the weekends has met with some laughs by locals. The whole idea seems just preposterous.
The warning in question is not very specific nor indeed much of a real warning. „In addition, be aware that downtown Reykjavik can become disorderly in the early morning hours on weekends.“
Whoa! Disorderly? How about university campuses in the US? How about New Years Eve in New York?
This is utter crap from a government intent on frightening its people by every means possible. Perhaps understandably; it is easier to control fear-stricken peoples.
But is there an ounce of truth in this? A tiny bit but nothing to warn people about.
Sure, you will probably see very drunken people behaving erratically late at night at weekends here. A handful will let fists fly at the first chance but seldom for no reason. But there are loud and drunken peoples in every place on earth over weekends. Still, you do not see a special warning about every place on earth do you.
