Air Iceland passenger planes are sturdy but seating tight as Madonna´s jeans. PIC McNulty

No, wait a minute. There is no such thing as flying cheaply within Iceland. Scratch that headline.

However, there are ways to fly within Iceland and not maxing all your credit cards to smithereens in the process.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]sturdy as hell but seating is mighty tight and overweight passengers will have problems.[/blockquote]

First off you need to understand there is no competition in the flying business within Iceland. There is Air Iceland and then there is Air Iceland. Actually, there is also Eagle Air, but these are small potatoes and offers on their routes as common as solar eclipses.

Should you have a decent idea of what you want to explore in Iceland but have limited time to do it then flying is the way to go. Driving to Myvatn in the North for example will take sex hours off your time here while flying you can be there in just over an hour.

Once you have your favorite places mapped out you go to Air Iceland website and a small banner on the front page shows you the current “Netoffers” to and from the various destinations. Clicking on those will bring you lowest price on flights on that particular route a month or two into the future. However, be aware there is no baggage included with the Netoffers and tickets can only be changed for a steep fee and no refunds. But the price difference between grabbing one of those offers and buying at regular ticket price a few days before can be as much as 100$ / 80€ one way and much more should you want to fly to Greenland.

If your plan is not rigidly in place and you find you have a day or two to spare you should absolutely check their offers. You could well do a flight North or East, spend the best part of a day taking in the sights and be back in Reykjavik by evening without having to take any luggage at all. Not a bad idea if you ask us.
