Located in old abandoned warehouse underneath the offices of the Directorate of Customs is possible the worst flea market in the world. PIC redcrowstudios
Most local guide books make much of the fact that Reykjavik city has its very own flea market and even rave about its ambiance. Which is weird because this place is as horrible as horrible can be.
Normally team Total Iceland would just recommend for you to stay away but since Reykjavik generally has little to offer and this place is handily within just a few steps from most center hotels you might as well take a look.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]This place offers nothing but junk[/blockquote]
From the outside the building looks rather plain and commanding as it should be since this is the headquarters of the Directorate of Customs. It is here at ground floor you´ll find the market.
Why so horrible you might wonder?
Well, if you have been to markets in bigger cities and most of foreign tourists to Iceland naturally have, you know most markets at least offer something interesting. This place offers nothing but junk. Old clothes, old cd´s and records, old and crummy paperback books and really few things of any value for anybody. It hardly even stands up as an Icelandic flea market since many regular stalls here are manned by foreigners selling imported crap
There is also a small food section where you should be able to buy stuff for less than elsewhere. Fish, meats, candy and such but repeated checks have shown prices in this flea market are very much the same and sometimes higher than in regular supermarkets.
But don´t take our word for it. Try it yourself. @Tryggvagata road in downtown Reykjavik. Open every day in summer and on weekends in wintertime.
