Again and again team Total Iceland is flabbergasted about the greed of our compatriots. The most recent example from the same peoples getting loads of help and assistance when the famous unpronounceable Eyjafjallajokull volcano blew its top in 2010.
While the volcano was raging it was easy enough to feel sorry for the people living close to the eruption. The land blanketed by meters upon meters of ash killing livestock en masse and making breathing difficult for humans.
Now, a lot of those complaining the most in 2010 are now making a killing in tourism. Not a soul visiting Iceland does not visit the South to see the usual assortments of beautiful natural sights and that famous volcano too. Along the way buying all kinds of souvenirs and even forking out thousands of kronas for some ash in a vial.
But making a killing by doing nothing or little does not seem to be enough for the people in the South. Now they are introducing plans to build their very own international airport! Why? Because that way they get even more tourists and much quicker too.
How utterly stupid and greedy. Greedy because there are already too many tourists in the area in high-season and more will be way too many. Stupid because this is a highly volatile area geologically as evidenced by numerous volcanic eruptions here for centuries.
Even the Italian Mafia is not this greedy. The nearest airport to Mount Etna in Sicily is roughly three hours away in Catania. And Etna is the ultimate tourist volcano since it blows every other second it seems. And what is the US Forest Service thinking? They could easily quadruple the number of visitors to Yellowstone by building a large airport closer than five hours away…
For its part, team Total Iceland, apologizes for such blatant greed. Not the way to treat the people visiting.
