A major tourist attraction in Iceland are glacier tours in so-called Super-jeeps. Those are basically SUV´s on much larger tires than is normal. Those kind of trips are worth it if you have the dough but there is one major drawback about the jeeps. As Total Iceland has covered before they pollute like hell.
There is another option, much greener, and absolutely nicer too. Glacier trips on a dogsled.
Now, contrary to what you might expect Icelanders have never used dogs or sleds in any way. Two companies offer dog-sledding trips in Iceland. Lasting from an hour and up these are well worth it for lovers of snow and dogs and these trips have been getting nice reviews from visitors.
However, one company offers such trips all year on Langjokull glacier. This place is about two hours drive from Reykjavik city in the Borgarfjordur valley. Nearby is Husafell, home to one of the biggest concentration of summer houses in Iceland, and roughly half an hour away is Langjokull glacier.
There you´ll find the base of Dogsledding.is which is one of the companies offering these tours. Not really a company though but more a family affair.
A typical sledding tour lasts for an hour but should you require something special six hour trips are also available. Prices range from 115€ / 135 up to 322€ /460$.* Kids are half price.
Naturally, you´ll need to be a dog person to really, REALLY dig those kind of trips. But it is the best way to see a glacier and leave no trace.
