Hlemmur bus stop in Reykjavik is the only major bus stop where you can wait inside outside of business hours. PIC Bill Wards Brickpile
There is good reason to stay away from using the bus system in the greater Reykjavik area in Iceland. The system is both unreliable, inefficient and often confusing.
On the whole the system works fine as long as you are going to the center of Reykjavik. But should you want to explore further you´re in trouble. Not only are the times given at bus stops different from the ones given on the official website of Straeto, the bus company, but some routes are only serviced for a limited time per day. Thus you can easily be stranded somewhere unpleasant.
Most bus drivers speak English even if many speak only broken English. Only a handful speak other languages although many bus drivers are actually immigrants and not born in Iceland. Many of those don´t even speak the local language. Thus they can sometimes not help tourists wanting to know this or that and in some cases make matters worse by giving wrong information based on misunderstanding.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]There are no express buses in Reykjavik[/blockquote]
There are no express buses in Reykjavik and buses do not operate after 23 at night. Some routes close down at 19 and some do not operate on weekends.
It is a cumbersome and rather inefficient system and much worse when you don´t know your way around. Thus, our advice, is to use buses only going to downtown Reykjavik and not take many chances otherwise.
The ticket price is currently 350 ISK / 3$ / 2€ for a one way trip within the greater Reykjavik area. Ask for “skiptimidi” which gives you unlimited bus use for 60 minutes.
Information on routes are found here.
