It is not something the Icelandic tourist organization would blow their horns about but the dangers of people playing around on glaciers became apparent today after one tourist died and another one was injured when speeding along the Langjokull glacier on a snowmobile.
Sad as this news is it is nothing new. Hoards of knowledgeable locals have warned about the many tour operators offering glacier tours with little or sometimes no experience at all. Remarkably, no one has been killed yet by falling into a crevasse or suffering such horrible fate.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Remarkably, no one has been killed yet by falling into a crevasse[/blockquote]
While this particular accident is under investigation is goes without saying that a glacier is not a regular mound of snow. Glaciers are very close to being a living thing since they move and change appearances often like an old lady with little luck on the luxury liner dance floor.
It might sound stupid but we´ll accept that. DO TAKE CARE ON GLACIERS. Speeding on snowmobiles is fun but dangerous. Even the local guides do not know if a crevasse is underneath somewhere or some other danger lurks. Go slow and get home with a big smile.
