Most of us know the dilemma we usually face when venturing abroad on a holiday. Even packing for a simple Cancun or Benidorm holiday requires hours of contemplation. But packing for hot spots is easy as 1,2,3 compared to what you should bring before heading to Iceland in wintertime.
Let us start by saying that unless you intend to stay indoors on a short stay or buy a whole new wardrobe in Iceland you will always need to bring more than the average cabin allowance on low-cost airlines.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]you will not be smiling very much if you end up buying simple winter clothing and sturdy shoes here[/blockquote]
A trip to Iceland is most often not very cheap. One might find a great deal out there once in awhile but even if you get here cheaply you cannot hope to stay here and do things on the cheap. Most certainly you will not be smiling very much if you end up buying simple winter clothing and sturdy shoes here. It will cost you dearly in most stores.
While there is never a correct way to pack for a winter holiday way out in the North Atlantic it is better to err on the side of reason. Pay for the extra baggage and bring a a large suitcase with thermal winter clothing of good quality. Waterproof walking shoes are absolutely necessary if you want to see anything of value outdoors and live to tell the tale. Especially if going on any excursions.
Also needed are warm sweaters and you should always dress in multi-layered clothing if going on serious hikes. Always better to take things off if on the off chance it gets too hot than not having enough if the cold gets to you. You will need a few of those if going on repeated trips. Ski pants or similar waterproof pants are a requirement almost.
Things considered extras elsewhere such as warm scarves and mittens or gloves are downright essential here.
Note this applies partly also in summertime. Even in high summer winds can get pretty chilly and rain is a constant factor here year round.
To give you an idea of the price of outdoor pants, jacket and good shoes in Iceland expect to pay no less than 300$/225€ for the basics. Should you require brand name products better double or triple that amount.
