In the “most disgusting person” category of things in Iceland, Kristján Loftsson has been at the top or thereabouts for decades. This the sole individual, seriously well connected to local high profile politicians and ministers, is responsible for ALL fishing of whales in Icelandic territorial waters all this century.

Now, most scientific theories go as follows: It is not just normal but absolutely necessary to yearly cull most groups of large animals for the benefit of the animals as well as us humans.

A case in point; the yearly slaughter of 800 to well over thousand of a small contingent of reindeer roaming the wild East of Iceland. Everyone with half a brain or less can buy a gun, get a license, hire a guide and start firing away into the mist in five minutes flat.

The stories about wounded animals, heifers especially and often with newborn calves, wandering about for hours and or even days badly hurt are substantial each year. A consequence of no real IQ limits for blood hungry hunters. The only requirement is a knowledge about handling guns and Arctic temperature IQ will do nicely for that.

Alas, same goes for the “hero” of our story; Kristján Loftsson. This guy thinks not one iota about hunting whales pregnant with calves. Indeed, some have been hunted at the end of their pregnancy with the unborn calves having no chance at all in this beautiful world. Many whales hunted around Iceland suffer hours of agonizing pain before dying due to methods of hunting.

This is not just horrible but sad as F&%k. Even if us humans “need” to hunt a particular species for enjoyment or money, hunting pregnant animals, any pregnant animal, is nothing short of disgusting and evil.

Incidentally, the aforementioned Mr. Loftsson, can only sell his catch to Japan. The Japanese record for animal welfare has never been great:

But never mind the Japanese.

We are well aware, some Reykjavik restaurants, do offer whale meat on their menu. Just keep in mind that meat on your plate could very well be an “almost mother” whale of a catch.

Welcome to Iceland…
