The biggest and probably wildest weekend you can have in Iceland is during Tjodhatid festival in Westman Islands
U sually we are all for visitors taking in local events if they have the time and inclination. But there is one festival in particular you may not want to find yourself at the end of.
It is called Thjodhatid festival, Þjóðhátíð in Icelandic, and is the largest music/drinking festival in the country. Great party to be sure if you´re up for it and also a fine way to take in some popular local bands in one place over a weekend. This takes place in Vestmannaeyjar, Westman Islands, or more specifically in Heimaey and that´s where the problems lie for those tourist just “wanting to take a look.”
You see, taking a look here might take a lot longer than you anticipated. All flights and ferries to and from the island around this particular weekend are booked to the hilt and so are all hotels and guesthouses in the small town. Add to this horrible traffic on the South Coast during the same dates.
What we´re trying to say is to skip a tour to the island over the last weekend in July or the first weekend in August if you have a tight schedule and you are not up for partying like there is no tomorrow. Even if you have booked tickets for a flight or a ferry it is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled and ferry schedules to change on a moment´s notice. Thus, you might find yourself stuck on the island contrary to the plan.
