Locals have always called them horses and made no distinction between those and foreign bred animals. Some find this funny since the local and unique Icelandic horse comes pretty close to being a pony.

One of the major draws of Iceland as a tourist destination is the opportunity to go horseback riding in the countryside. Get amazing perspective of this marvelous country at the same time you get a feel for the Icelandic horse. It is one-of-a-kind for a reason.

They are unique in many respects. Compared to the largest stallions abroad the Icelandic horse looks indeed like a pony. In fact, most would actually fit into the pony category in many countries. Their famous distinctive gaits are well known too with two types found in few other horses in the world. The tolt gait, a smooth and comfortable for the rider but also gives instant acceleration and speed if needed. Then there is the quick and lovely skeid gait mostly used in competitions.

But most important about the Icelandic horse is its tranquility and ease around people. It is even possible to get close to wild horses here without much difficulty.

All this does not mean horse-riding is without danger as some seem to believe. Accidents happen as elsewhere and interested parties should keep deep in mind the fact that horses are animals and as such unpredictable. Make sure you have insurance covering a day out on horseback just in case as falling back off a horse, even pony-sized, can result in life-threatening injuries. But these are very rare and seldom happen with the professional services.

Team Total Iceland happily recommends spending time on the back of the nice creatures while traveling here in Iceland. For day-trips or longer prepare your bum beforehand. Then take a look at our list of horse-rentals found all over this island here.
