A s a nation Iceland has from the beginning been rather poor economically. This is the main reason many of the lighthouses found throughout the long coastline often are little more than a lighbulb with walls and glass thrown around.
However, every so often along the way the locals decided to do better to protect our fishermen and vessels in the grinding sea surrounding this island of ours. In some cases the government threw in some serious dough but others were simply built by locals raising money and then raising the lighthouse themselves.
