We don´t know about you but team Total Iceland believes we should treat animals as fairly and squarely as possible. Animals do so much for this humankind. Things we do not even notice in daily life.
Which is why, with great sadness, we have to report that Icelandic farmers are among the worst possible offenders to animals. Not least when it comes to pigs.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Yeah, stupid is what stupid does[/blockquote]
Pig farmers in Iceland fall easily into to disgusting category of things after it surfaced that every one of large-scale pig farmer in the country is treating the poor animals like trash à la American-style. Which is to say that small pig farmers here are using American-like industrial practices when raising their meat-to-be. Practices like cramming pigs into cubicles so small the animals cannot move at all. Practices like herding so many pigs into one place as to guarantee injuries and skin infections and horrible life for the animal.
Which might make the Americans very happy since they can buy their meat dirt cheap but in a place supposedly at the forefront of modernity like the rest of the Nordic countries, this is but a scandal. But a scandal natural enough since the right wing government of Iceland hates oversight of any kind. Thus, disgusting farmers get away with everything here. In fact, our rather one-sided minister of agriculture, himself a farmer, when told of the horrible situation of most pigs in the country, spoke of the need to make more money available to pig farmers. Yeah, stupid is what stupid does.
In any case, do not consume any pig meat in Iceland. That will only benefit farmers that treat their animals as horribly as horrible can be.
