Black sands and old lava covered with delicate green moss in autumn in Iceland. Two tire tracks in the ground here would be sufficient to ruin this landscape for all eternity. Respect the land. PIC Bastian Vaucher
If we had a dime, or better yet Chinese yuan, for every time idiotic foreigners decide to pay a visit to the highlands of Iceland during wintertime George Soros would be red with envy.
Once again for the umpteenth time the local news report a rescue mission to save foreigners stuck in the highlands and naturally all ended well. The people were rescued unhurt and thankful for it.
Normally that would be the end of the matter since rescue mission in Iceland are mostly made by volunteers and the cost falls entirely on those same volunteer groups. Power to those people.
However, one would have to be hundred per cent illiterate and retarded in the head to venture into the highlands of Iceland just like that in wintertime.
First of all the highland roads in the country are all officially closed during wintertime and clearly marked as such everywhere. This is not just for fun. The highland is extremely delicate landscape and even with hard snow on top driving here can easily ruin the soil underneath. Numerous examples exist and many of the deep and ugly tracks visitors see here during summertime are made by reckless drivers during wintertime.
Second of all, as its name implies the highlands are a bit higher up than the lowlands. This seems not to register with many foreign visitors who blatantly disregard local laws and disrespect the unique nature by making their way here regardless. Most of those even try getting there on smaller vehicles when even large 4×4 monsters have difficulty driving in the deep snow in the highland.
As if that is not bad enough it also seems those same people don´t even dress up for bad weather. Trust us on this; even if many wonder why the island is called Iceland when all is green and beautiful will rapidly change their minds if stuck in the highland during a light storm in winter in the highland.
There are some tour companies that offer trips into certain places in the highland area over winter. These trips are made by professionals and only when weather and conditions are good. Should you need to see the snow covered highland take a ride with those.
But we have but one highland here and the world has but one Iceland. That is why we kindly request stupid tourists like this to stay at home and ruin their own country.
