Chances of seeing the Northern lights in Iceland are not much in your favor. PIC c@rljones

This post will most likely incur wrath from 99 percent of local tour companies of Iceland but the truth must be told and nothing but. Chances of seeing the Northern lights in Iceland are 60/40 at best.

Of course you will read nothing about this online just as you will hardly find articles describing the rare sightings of whales on whale watching trips. The industry does not want you to know.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]seeing the Northern lights on a scheduled tour is 60/40 at best[/blockquote]

What you will read in the small print is that this company and that company reserves the right to keep your money if nothing is seen on Northern light tours in Iceland. You will find no one offering discounts or pure refund if such a trip is a complete waste. And they often are. Although no statistic is kept officially team Total Iceland contends the likelihood of actually seeing the Northern lights on a scheduled tour is 60/40 at best. Just gut feeling from speaking to people in the business, travelers on the road and living here for decades.

We realize most of you guys long for seeing this greatest show on earth and quite a number travel from far and away especially for it. But it is also a waste to spend five to eight hours of your Iceland trips jammed into a crowded tour bus and maybe two or three times in row.

Tour operators are by and large pretty fair but they are selling a product and they will give a go-ahead for a Northern lights tour if there is any chance at all. But you, having come from afar, want better than that. You want good or great chances. So make your own mind and do not let tour staff make that decision for you. Check out this page where we have listed four independent agencies measuring Northern lights activity at any given time. Those will give you pretty accurate information and can save you a pained bum for nothing after bouncing around in a bus for hours and hours without seeing much more than the seat in front of you.
