O ne of the more beautiful and easily accessible waterfalls of Iceland is Skogafoss at the tiny hamlet of Skogar in South Iceland. Everybody stops here for a Kodak moment and then keep on trucking. Big mistake.

It is a mistake because the very impressive Skogafoss waterfall is but the icing on a large and very heavenly cake.

You see, if you take a walk to the top of Skogafoss as many do you find out two things. That the view from the top is amazing too and secondly that the Skogafoss river snakes its way far into the highland here. On the way the river has carved a beautiful canyon into the earth and in the process made a number of other quite lovely waterfalls at places. Some of which rival Skogafoss itself.

Should you have time on your hands this is most definitely a trek you should make and from here you could even make the journey more fabulous by walking all the way into Thorsmork Nature Reserve. This takes patience, good form and preparation but what you get instead will never be measured in money.

Oh, and that way you´ll also walk beside Eyjafjallajokull glacier which gained world recognition in 2010 when it paralyzed air travel after erupting.

Do inquire about details from locals or guides in the area before heading out since this hike, like most others in Iceland, can easily get you lost.
