The most famous public square in Iceland now almost landlocked by hotels and places catering to tourists. Is this anything you would like to visit in the future?

The capital of Iceland is not a big city. Neither does it have very much to recommend it. But it seems even its most famous and popular public town square, Austurvollur, is worth sacrificing.

Austurvollur square is the green area roughly in the middle of the map above. This is the square directly in front of the Icelandic parliament and  the cathedral of Reykjavik. This is the setting for the famous kitchenware revolution in 2008 and long before that other protests over things that mattered to this small nation.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Locals are endangered species in downtown Reykjavik[/blockquote]

Austurvöllur square is the center of most biggest festivals held here and on nice summer days the grassy area is filled with people of all ages enjoying the setting. The pinkish areas show hotels and other places catering mostly to foreigners.

Does this look like a nice place to get in touch with locals in Reykjavik? When does a place appeal to foreigners and when does it not?

Team Total Iceland has traveled all continents and stayed in more cities than we care to remember. Never, ever have we found places where the most number of tourists gather most appealing. On the contrary, we travel to meet locals and get to know foreign customs, food, lifestyle and etc….

What about you? Find this sexy?
