It´s natural and smart to ask locals about places to go in Reykjavik but some take advantage. PIC Patrick Neuhaller

Team Total Iceland has in the past implored you guys visiting to not be afraid of asking locals about anything at all. Not simply because we are friendly bunch but because that is often the only way to get heads-up about new or exciting shops, restaurants or places otherwise not mentioned in guide books. But there is one catch you should know about.

Turns out a number of rather shady peoples are taking advantage of this. We know of people working the front desks in hotels and even in official tourist information sites getting paid for recommending particular spots to trusting foreigners asking around.

Smart idea indeed if you look at the business side of things. In spite of everything many tourists have not a clue where to go for great lunch or cheap dinner or the nicest bar. Many might use apps and gadgets or guide books but a lot of folks also just inquire at the front desk.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]the rotten apples always spoil everything[/blockquote]

Which in a perfect world should be the best idea. But the rotten apples always spoil everything natural in this world and while this is certainly not illegal it is most certainly immoral. It means you may not get good or right info about the best sushi-place or best tour-operator or best-price taxi service at all. Rather the opposite.

Our advice? Keep on asking but do so on the streets from strangers with no agenda to or fro. Do not worry about the reaction. We are extremely nice folks.
