Remember that volcanic rift in the North of Iceland a few months ago? Would you believe it is still going strong? Pressure is mounting to allow limited numbers of tourist to visit the place on land.

Just like team Total Iceland predicted when the lava fissure at Holuhraun opened up earlier this winter it now looks as if this flow of molten earth will flow freely for months and even years. The flow has been steady for a couple of months now and tour agencies are adamant that with care they should be able to bring tourists to the site in low numbers.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]there really is little reason to uphold a ban on getting close[/blockquote]

While officially little has been said on the matter we will venture to predict that some limited access will indeed be granted soon enough. The main reasons that the flow of lava is slow and not very threatening to anyone and secondly because tourism is now the number one industry in Iceland and parliament members usually cave under much pressure from any industry.

Until now, all access has been closed off except for a few scientists and the only way to witness the spectacular flow of lava has been from the air in rented helicopters or scheduled scenic flights.

But there really is little reason to uphold a ban on getting close by land. As long as the guides are professional and groups are limited in size offering tours should present no problems. The only dangerous thing is the poisonous fumes from the rift but this is easily avoided.
