The local low-cost airline Wow Air hardly stands up to its name. PIC Aero Icarus

The name Wow Air has been making the rounds in media and social media lately. This Icelandic low-cost airline is aiming to show trans-Atlantic low cost flights are possible without going off a cliff as some airlines have done in the past. Locally though, Wow Air is way more expensive than British-based easyJet.

Low cost airlines are still a thing in Iceland unlike in Europe where the low cost model has been running for more than fifteen years with great success. While we did have one airline that could on occasion fulfill the low-cost requirements, Iceland Express, that airline was on the brink of going under when the owner of Wow Air came to its rescue and bought huge chunks of its business..[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]Wow Air, is on average 70% more expensive than easyJet[/blockquote]

Fast forward a few years and according to a survey done by a local travel website, Wow Air, is on average 70% more expensive than easyJet of Britain. EasyJet is one of four European airlines flying regularly to Iceland although routes are extremely limited.

Turns out, the median price for a one-way flight from Reykjavik to London with Wow Air next October costs 186$ / 170€ while the British airline easyJet offers the same one-way flight route for 111$ / 101€.

That´s tremendous price difference for two airlines flying under the low-cost flag? Which means, if you can fly cheaply to Iceland you might want to think twice before booking with Wow Air onward to Europe. It might save you serious dough doing some price comparison before.
