W elcome to the only village in Iceland named after a convent. Kirkjubæjarklaustur literally means Church farm convent and is a reminder that once upon a time monks and later Benedictine nuns made this place their home for a time.
Kirkjubaejarklaustur, or just Klaustur as many locals refer to it, is very very small with only about 140 inhabitants. In fact it is so small we know people have driven right past without realizing it was even a village. Which is hard to do as Klaustur sits on the Ring Road circling the whole country.
The problem might lie in the fact that most people driving through only really see one horrible looking gas station slash fast food restaurant. A tiny detour is needed to actually drive into the village and being so small that takes all of a few seconds.
The village is not gonna blow anyone´s mind. Primarily this is a service center with most basic services available year round. But the location and surroundings of Klaustur are impressive and distinct. Built by the hills of a small mountain and at one spot a beautiful waterfall, Sisters Fall, is very much worth checking out. Indeed, we recommend you follow the small river all the way up to a small lake, Sisters lake, where fishing is possible and a finer place to enjoy the view around these parts is hard to find. The trek is neither hard nor long.
Many topographical names here bear witness to its catholic past. In particular a rocky mound located slightly west of the village itself. Named Sisters Mound and the story goes that here lie buried two sisters and nuns that were burnt at the stake for their sins. One supposedly sold her soul to the devil while the other took the name of god in vain. The area around Sisters Mound is excellent for walking or trekking with many distinct natural features dotting the landscape.
In the village is a fine hotel and guesthouses are here also. A nice campsite is found here too. Around the village are numerous farms offering either sleeping bag accommodation or small summer cabins for rent.
This is also a popular spot for fishermen. Trout and salmon fishing is available and highly recommended activity.
Kirkjubaejarklaustur is mostly popular for its location between Vik Myrdal and Vatnajokull Park area and not for its own sake very much / This place easily found. Just follow the southern part of the Ring Road / The nature here is quite fascinating and pretty distinct for Iceland but the village itself is of little value.
