Judging from complaints, emails and comments online quite a number of visitors to Iceland have a hard time getting their hands on good driving maps. Team Total Iceland to the rescue.

Truth be told fantastic maps are not at all available as far as we know. But you do not need any fancy schmanzy maps either. This is tiny Iceland and the road system is complicated for no one with IQ over zero. What folks have to keep in mind there is no danger anywhere. There are no dark and scary woods here, no highland retreats for an evil bunch of hillbillies praying on tourists and in fact there are few lowland roads that present much of a challenge. Even to challenged people.[blockquote type=”blockquote_line” align=”right”]the road system is complicated for no one with IQ over zero[/blockquote]

The only real things people have to keep in mind are:
• Roads are ridiculously narrow with barely space for two vehicles and thus you need constant FOCUS
 • A number of one-lane bridges are found throughout which again demand constant FOCUS
 • While many roads are paved most also have gravel on each side. This takes many by surprise. Again, keyword here is FOCUS
 • Many roads really only lead to distant farms and even if you make a wrong turn there is never any danger. Mostly just fun
That said, take a look at maps here from the Geological Survey Institute. Or take a look at detailed maps with warnings from the local Road and Coastal Administration here.
