One of the more enjoyable things when traveling abroad is stumbling upon the varied markets, indoor and outdoor, found in many cities and remarkably often in smaller towns and villages. In the capital of Iceland you´ll be hard pressed to find but one and not very interesting at that.
Foreigners staying in the center of the city of Reykjavik may have ventured into to only formal market around. The Reykjavik Fleamarket is sadly, in our view, both horrible and not really a market in any sense of the word as we explain here.
That is pretty much it when it comes to markets in the city. True, once or twice a year there are some temporary markets put up in downtown but that aside you will have to go all the way into the suburbs to find anything resembling a market.
Although the word „market“ suggests an area teeming with life that is hardly the case in the small indoor market in the shopping complex known as Mjodd. To be fair, neither is the shopping complex very nice or complex either.
But here you will at least mostly find handcrafted local items and you can take it all in indoors which often comes in handy on this windswept island. Not exactly recommended but easy to get to if you have exhausted things to wander about in Reykjavik.
